Eating out: Aux Beaux Arts MGM Macau

This is our default Sunday brunch place when we wake up and don’t know where to go. Aux Beaux Arts is always a good idea and I always end up ordering the same thing, half a dozen of escargots followed by mussels and fries or the chicken stuffed with foie gras. It never fails me. Chef usually orders eggs benedict to start and then either a beef tartare or a steak frites or the sole meuniere that the husband is always craving for when he wants to ‘eat light’. They sell out quickly, so reserve the sole when you make your reservation. Desserts are usually fresh, fruity, tart and sweet and beautifully plated.

This new summer dessert is a tart sweet sorbet topped with verbana espuma. I’d take a second helping anytime.

The seafood platter is also always a good idea, but takes a chunk of the bill when you do order the delightfully fresh seafood platter. It is however, very popular with the Chinese and the quality is great, but way too much for two when we start with this – we can’t finish our regular favourite dishes, so we’ve done without it for sometime, but we will probably resume if we get a larger party of friends to come.

Anyhow, chef Eli is fun, friendly and really creative. The food is consistent and always great. So, where do chefs eat on their days off? Aux Beaux Arts is one of our regular haunts. The location is wonderful – there’s always an anchor installation piece – if you haven’t already seen the Valkryie Octopus – you must. And if you dine here, choose the terrace seats and you’ll have full view of it with streaming sunlight over their skylit dome roof.

The interiors remind one of 1930s style brasseries in Paris – art deco lamps, dark wood and furnitures with details.

Service – always attentive, friendly and cheerful.
