Eating out: Man Man by Teppei Singapore

There are always snaking queues outside this little restaurant at both lunch and dinner time. I found the magic hour of short queues and wait time – about 130pm after the lunch crowd leaves on weekdays. I haven’t had to queue too long for a table and it’s a quick robatayaki fix. The eels are taken live from the fish tank and cooked over a charcoal grill. The sets start from $23.90 (?) and there’s a larger version of the eel set with more rice and more eel at over $35.

I’ve been here on several occasions and also tried the grilled pork belly which was flavourful, smokey and just the right side of fatty.

Is it worth the long queues? I wouldn’t wait more than an hour here, but best to take a late lunch or early dinner to bypass the queues. The bento set includes fresh wasabi you grate over your food and soup, and you can eat the grilled eel two ways – with your rice, or pour the hot broth over your eel and rice for Unagi Chazuke which reminds me a little of teochew porridge, basically watery rice with a bath of delicious consommé.
