Hong Kong Bites: Private Kitchen Comilonas

Another great meal with the AG foodies group. The private kitchen idea is flourishing in Hong Kong and I don’t quite get the fuss, but I really enjoyed and appreciated what Carrie and her partner has done at Comilonas. Carrie has never lived in Spain, but regular visits to visit her Spanish husband’s family gave her inspiration to master the art of tapas and catalan cuisine. I love everything about this place, the food, the ambience, the hosts. Also, I love the logo and identity they’ve come up with to match the Mediterranean spirit they are trying to recreate in Hong Kong. I didn’t attempt drinking wine the traditional way– from the long spout of the porron.

Trivia: tapas means lid and was derived from the old days where people journeying from afar on houses would stop in inns for a bite and drink. This was brought to them in a wine pitcher with a long spout called a porron, covered with a slice of bread with cheese or chorizo.

The night’s menu:

Picked up a bottle of Rioja from Watson’s Wine, but the label I forget!

I wasn’t a big fan of the cod that could have done with a little more salt.

Absolutely loved these melt-in-your-mouth mussels and we all cleaned up the gravy with bread.

Octopus unfortunately was overcooked, and bland. Would have been rescued with sprinkle of seasalt and some lemon juice.

Hot and sinfully crispy croquettes stuffed with jamon! Delish!

Fresh and perfectly done garlic prawns. This was the favourite of everyone else that night. I’m still thinking of those mussels. :)

spicy chorizo, inseparable from the bread.

This dish, I wasn’t sure about, pork and cuttlefish balls with chocolate sauce. The cuttlefish flavour was overpowering and the dish actually reminded me of the traditional “lion’s head” 狮子头 found in Northern Chinese restaurants.

Not the best arroz con leche  I’ve had (well the best was in Spain!) and somewhat lacking the nutmeg and lemon zest. Well, perhaps it’s catered more to the Asian palette, lighter on the spices.
