Shop: Sardines cans Lojas das Conservas Macau
This shop opened a couple of months ago discreetly in the old part of town with walls stacked from floor to ceiling of beautiful sardine cans. I don’t know about others, but I have a bad habit of buying stuff for their beautiful packaging and have a number of sardines boxes and cans after consuming the fish.
Sardines are a staple of the Portuguese diet, and this influence is very much alive at Lojas das Conservas Macau where shelves are lined in beautifully packaged cans of sardines of various vintages, qualities and marinates. Check the wall for information on each fisherman and producer, a form of preserving part of the artisanal food craft.
My sardines expert friends bought a bunch and reported that the more expensive ones (regardless of vintage but more quality of the fish itself, olive oil and the way the fishes were brined etc).
It’s right across my favourite morning congee hole in the wall Cheng Kei.
These sardines definitely make for great souvenirs for any design/typography lover friend. Better than those tourist almond cookies.
