60 Years of Tiger Onisuka in Beijing

Following China’s grand scale celebration, Tiger Onisuka celebrated 60 years of their sneakers in Beijing with an interesting showcase of shoes over the ages.

Not to forget how Uma Thurman made these shoes the IT sneakers after Kill Bill that sent sneaker collectors into a frenzy.

The MINI Cooper Edition.

I dug a little into the history of these shoes and found the “Tiger” inspiring given how its Japanese founder Kihachiro Onitsuka wanted to relieve the tension of traumatised youth of immediate post-war Japan. Carrying the name of Asia’s most ferocious and revered animal, it was clear that a promising adventure lay far ahead.

In 1977, the brand was renamed Asics(“Anima sana in corpore sano”). Today, we see the classic “Mexico 66” everywhere, but possibly the most successful model is the limited addition Tokidoki series made in collaboration with Italian artist Simone Legno, as seen above.
