Su Xinping’s Ganbei Art Series

I love this Su Xinping‘s art series. At first these figures seemed spooky and scared me in the night, but they made me laugh in the day time. So quintessentially Chinese, middle aged men with pot bellies hanging out, posing with absolute self confidence. The only thing missing in this fibre glass series is a glass of baijiu in hand.

“Historically, drinking has been a collective activity embedded with male social codes initiated by the host. Su’s bare-chested men of strikingly frank physiques are visually disconcerting as they represent almost caricature portraitures of stark humanity.

The mood is one of pessimism, in search of escapism as the artist attempts to unfold the complexities of the human condition in today’s New China.”
