This week, we had something a little different in the canteen, banana in place of yogurt and some curry potatoes. I hadn’t eaten in the canteen the whole week as I couldn’t stomach food. I choose crispy cartilagey chicken over “cat’s ears” noodle—the Chinese rendition of orecchiette (whichever was invented first… following the Marco Polo Silk Road travel debate). I traded the chicken cartilage with some noodles of my colleagues (as you can’t have both the meat dish and the red plate rule) and it was a balanced meal, with a side of Chinese curry potatoes, that always leaves this heavy taste of iron lingering on my palate. I don’t know what goes into Chinese curry spices, but… I suppose Chinese curry is an oxymoron in itself.
