Back to school after Summer holidays mean back on the virus and evil bugs trail – here are some DIY ideas to do at home to maintain sanity in this heat.

We had a great summer with no virus and illnesses, but a week into school, kiddo came back with God knows what viruses and upper respiratory track infections – we tested negative on all the panels for Flu A & B and variations and types of influenza, Adeno virus, Covid, RSV and Mircoplasma – apparently all very common these days.

  1. Vegetable block printing was one of my favourite DIY craft activities as a kid
A little wasteful with food, but its compostable, so we’re not adding to environmental pollution. We used these think papers we use to wrap our veggies from the wet market and plan to recycle them as wrapping paper for presents. Want not, waste not!

We used some old potatoes that were past their good edible phase, so I cut up some simple patterns, there’s plenty of inspiration on Pinterest on what prints you can make. I would like to try with some Okra (ladies fingers) for star prints or maybe starfruit for a different shape.

2. Tea parties with kitchen toys and soft toys

At 3+, 4 years old, this role playing game is always a hit

3. DIY Rainbow sock bubbles

We didn’t successfully get a nice rainbow bubble bridge, but it was good fun to get this together. you need a plastic bottle and an old sock as well as some food colouring and dish soap for this activity.

4. Painting in the shower and cleaning up after

It’s an easy option to extend shower/bath time to an hour, stick your kid into the shower/bath and let them go wild with painting the walls or bathtub with kid-friendly paint and give them the brush and window cleaner to clean up after. Sensory play, craft and learning the responsibility of cleaning up – all in one activity! It will buy you about 45-60 minutes to have a break!

5. Kinetic sand

We make “ice cream” and also throw in our little construction vehicles for some sensory play. Little Nature Wanderlust has a great ice cream kit they just launched, but I could not justify getting another ice cream kit and am making do with what we have.

Highly recommend Barbie’s creative play kits. We still play with the construction kit I ordered from her when kiddo was one. And he turns FOUR today!
