Hong Kong bites: Bettys Kitchen

I’ve read and heard lots of mix reviews of this place, and tips from my foursquare check-in was all about how it was overpriced and they couldn’t deliver. We unfortunately also experienced the same. This Hong Kong outfit is another project by Alan Yau of London Hakkasan fame and the restaurant boasts lovely interiors by local design wunderkind Andre Fu and a full house of both locals and expats, but sadly the food doesn’t live up to the buzz or its name.

We had greasy burger with very soggy buns (my pet peeve!) and even more greasy fish and chips that made my stomach churn after.

A pity given the nice interiors and beautifully done brand identity. Maybe the a la carte menu is better than what we tried over the weekend. Still, I’m not sure about giving it a second chance, the price and quality just doesn’t match up.

We probably had our worst dining experience in 16 years of wining and dining hong kong at Bettys Kitchen. The service was average, the food was either bland like the over-rated 36hour short rib which lacked in flavour, was dry and looked rather lonesomely sad on a huge plate! The stuffed squid with chorizo rice was bordering on disgusting -the rice was too salty and the squid was stuffed with carrots and barely cooked onions , and this being rather bland as well. It was a comedy of errors – the staff didn’t know what we ordered, brought us the wrong dishes, told us after an hour that the beef bourguignon had run out! And had the gall to offer him the same dog bone called short rib, which by the way did satisfy my dogs. The best part of the evening was the one and only south African wine which was excellent . I will never go back and will make sure none of my friends go there . The bill was a whopping hkd4200 and I left longing for a McDonalds , which is my annual treat.

sorry to hear about your experience Mel :( We’ve had our fair share of awful food at astronomical prices. I have heard mix reviews about Betty’s but am definitely not giving it a second chance.

on a lighter note, any good places you’ve been to lately? Am meaning to try private liberty works. Had a private dinner with the former chef Makoto and it was sublime.
