The best thing about living on the West side of the island is how local the neighbourhood is. There are plenty of Cha Chaan Tengs for a local breakfast of sinfully processed but delicious food.
Saiyingpun is home to the seafood street that sells all sorts of sea animals in their dried forms and the whole street smells like scampi. And then there are the local noodle joints, hole in the wall dim sum places, congee places and the usual run down cha chaan tengs still stuck in the 60s with black ceilings, vintage flooring tiles and all.
I was on my way to the post office and stumbled into this cha chaan teng on first street and had the typical breakfast of instant noodles 公仔面 with grilled pork chops and a hot milk tea—the pièce de resistance of local diners. All this for just 22HKD.
Apparently the west side was is one of the older areas in Hong Kong bustling with commerce in the old days. Hence the way streets are simply named, 1st, 2nd, 3rd street and then high street up the slope. Perpendicular to that we have Western Street, Centre Street and Eastern Street.
So much more to discover in the neighbourhood and I’m going to continue stumbling into new local joints.
