Chez Serge is one of the best address in Carpentras and many living in the Provence region drive over just to dine here. Well, it’s truffle season and the menu speaks nothing but truffles.
The cosy beautiful space in the middle of Provence, but I unfortunately didn’t feel that the food nor service deserved any limelight, and pretty much uneventful. It’s the ambience and setting here that differentiates itself from the other establishments around town and clearly they’ve got the best crowd.
Overcooked foie gras with mushrooms, caramelised onions and truffles… heavy and a mouthful on an uneventful greasy pastry crust.
Strange truffles risotto that had the consistency of English porridge – weird cereal-like texture of not quite baby food meets breakfast porridge at 25€ no less. The truffles pasta fit for 3 persons however was a winner – buttery rich, earthy and delish.
Meat balls in tomato sauce and a side of wild rice – hearty and tasty, brasserie style.
While I’m not sure if we’d be coming back, it’s clearly the place to go if you’re in Carpentras and if it’s truffle season – they’ve got a select few special truffles inspired dishes. Just don’t order the risotto. Remember to make a reservation as they are full all year round, with waitlists.
