Eating out: Co Thanh Hong Kong

co thanh hong kongThis Kau U Fong spot has been on the lips of a few friends since it opened and a stone’s throw from the apartment, so we went to check it out. It should be a month post opening now. I came here 3 times in a week while I was back in Hong Kong and have tried all versions of their soup base: tom yam, fish and beef broth.

The fish broth is the tastiest of the lot, but I suppose the kitchen is still working on consistency as it taste a little different each time. It was in its third week since it opened, I am sure given more time, they’d get the formula right.

The menu is inspired by the famous Saigon’s street stall “Lunch lady” which has been a hit since it got featured by Bourdain. The deep fried taro-filled spring rolls are a great way to start, wrap them in lettuce leaves and drizzle the sauce generously over them before taking a bite.

The kitchen bar is the best seat in the house as you get a direct view into the kitchen. I’ll definitely be coming back as it’s easy comfort food.

Meal for greedy to comes up to about 400HKD, we had a bowl of noodles each, a lime soda and a salty plump soda and a Banh mi sandwich.

There’s usually a queue, but weekday nights have much shorter queues than peak lunch hour.
