Creative Mornings Hong Kong

In May, I went back to attending the monthly Creative Mornings gatherings. An offshoot of the original meetings in Switzerland started by SwissMiss, Tina Roth Eisenberg, a designer I have been following for over two decades. It grew into a global movement with different chapters around the world with a monthly theme and a guest speaker each month.

It’s a great way to connect with a like-minded community in different cities and be inspired by all the original creative output and learn all about the artists’ process, in a world that’s becoming increasingly stale with computer-generated images, artwork and concepts.

I was particularly invested in May’s Creative Mornings presentation because I knew of Dominic and Plaster8 during my time living in Beijing. It was one of the coolest stores at the Drum & Bell Tower, selling irreverent and clever slogans on T-shirts.

Turns out he’s been based in Hong Kong for years, settled in Mui Wo and continuing with his creative projects, including a beautiful collection of bird wall murals painted across Mui Wo. These birds are either native to the Hong Kong eco-system or migratory birds that make a stop in Hong Kong. He partnered with a British graffiti artist to create these wonderful bird images for the FLOCK project.

This crowdsourcing project (both in information and funding) has built a great momentum and engagement with both the local community and bird enthusiasts who help name the birds and contribute information on other species.

Johnson has shared that he will be opening a store in Hong Kong later this year selling merchandise and I’m looking forward to supporting the local art scene with purchasing some irreverent T-shirts!
